Village to be named after Sir Edmund Hillary

Media release – November 22, 2006

Landmark retirement village to be named after Sir Edmund Hillary

Ryman’s announced today that its landmark retirement village in Remuera is to be named Edmund Hillary Retirement Village.

Ryman spokesperson Debbie Jarratt said that the company felt very privileged to be able to name the village after Sir Edmund.

“It is fantastic that we are able to pay tribute to Sir Edmund’s achievements and contribution to society in the naming of our new village. He is one of NZ’s most respected citizens and his achievements have been an inspiration to us all.”

Sir Edmund and Lady June Hillary said that they were delighted to be able to lend their support to the new retirement village.

“We are delighted to be associated with Ryman’s new village at Abbotts Way. It will be a real asset for the local community and will provide Aucklanders with wonderful options in their retirement.”

The new village has been a long time in the planning and is scheduled to open in May 2007. The village will offer independent retirement living in the form of townhouses, apartments and serviced apartments, as well as resthome and hospital care facilities.

It will feature a range of resort-style facilities which are unprecedented in New Zealand, including a small golf course, tennis court, bowling green, indoor heated swimming pool and spa. The village centre will feature a café, lounges, bar, private dining room, hair and beauty salons, a chapel and fabulous internal atriums.

The village is being developed by Ryman Healthcare, an NZX listed company, who were the creators of the prestigious Grace Joel Retirement Village in St Heliers.

On completion the village will be home to over 500 residents and employ up to 200 staff.
