Chess at the Peak for Summer 2007

A giant chess set will complement the opening of the mountain biking season at Coronet Peak on Wednesday 3rd January and provide an absorbing past-time for those wanting a mental workout rather than, or as well as, a physical one.

Alli Edwards, Mountain Biking Operations Manager said the giant size chess set offers hours of fun and entertainment in the fresh air for everyone of all ages.

“These giant chess set pieces are so much fun. There is just something fascinating about walking amongst the pieces while considering your next move. The pieces are scaled to regular chess size with the King standing 640mm tall,” said Alli.

“Coronet Peak will be an awesome place to hang out this summer, whether you’re mountain biking, hanging out on the sundeck enjoying refreshments from the brasserie or challenging your opponent to a game of chess.”

Now launching into its second season, Coronet Peak Bike Park opens on January 3 with the unveiling of a brand new 4.2km downhill cross country track to complement the existing world class 1.6 km downhill single track.

Also just announced is a daily shuttle transport service to Coronet Peak which will run from the Station Building at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 4:00pm. For riders not cycling back into town, the return transport leaves Coronet Peak at 12:30pm, 3:30pm and 7:00pm. The service cost $10 per adult and $5 per child each way.

Coronet Peak sales & marketing manager David Ovendale says the new trail means that fun and challenging mountain biking is on offer for all level of riders.

“We will now have terrain available for all levels, from amateurs through to elite riders. People can get their wheels off the ground or not and either way the experience will be exciting and exhilarating riding in a stunning scenic environment.”

“Mountain biking allows the facilities and fantastic landscapes at Coronet Peak to be put to summer use.”

A range of adult bike rentals will be available at the base area operated in conjunction with Outside Sports, and coffee, light meals, beer or wine will be served at the Coronet Peak Brasserie.

Season passes are available at $249 adult and $199 youth. A special deal is available to 2006 nzski season passes holders at $149 adult and $99 youth. The passes are only available through eBuy, nzski.com’s secure online season pass shop at www.nzski.com.

Day passes are priced at $30 adult and $20 youth or $125 and $80 respectively for a book of 5 x Anytime passes. Single ride sightseeing passes are available for $15 adult and $10 youth. These passes can be purchased at Coronet Peak or downtown at selected information centres and bike shops.
