Countdown Begins To Australia's Largest Event

Countdown Begins To Australia's Largest Event

Sydney Royal Easter Show: 5 - 18 April 2007

As the countdown begins to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Tourism New South Wales and Show organisers are calling for more Kiwis to experience the Show that attracts around one million visitors from around the world every year.

With less than three months to go until gates open, the Show's General Manager of Events and Marketing, John Aitken, says there are still trans-Tasman flight and accommodation packages available for Kiwis looking to visit the unique event.

"The feedback we receive from Kiwis is that there is nothing quite like the Sydney Royal Easter Show in New Zealand. It's not only the biggest event in Australia, but the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere - and quite unlike any other show in the world," says Mr Aitken.

Tourism New South Wales Executive Director and General Manager, John O'Neill, says the Royal Easter Show is a major event on the Sydney events calendar.

"Autumn is the perfect time of year to visit Sydney with a range of over 80 events, including the Royal Easter Show. Combine this with the backdrop of the world's most stunning harbour, perfect weather and a plethora of dining and shopping, and you will see why there's no place in the world like Sydney," says Mr O'Neill.

The Show, dating back to 1823, is an Aussie icon offering visitors the opportunity to experience the real Australia in one venue. The 14-day event incorporates everything Australian from the best in animals, agriculture and rural life to the latest in entertainment, dare-devil stunts, extreme carnival rides, cultural celebrations, fashion parades and award-winning culinary experiences.

"In 2006 around 7,500 New Zealanders attended the Show, representing one of the largest groups of visiting internationals. We're expecting to double Kiwi attendance by 2010," says Mr Aitken.

The Sydney Royal Easter Show is recognised internationally and was recently announced as the winner of the 2006 New South Wales Tourism Award for Major Festivals and Events.

Special travel packages are available including two nights' accommodation, Air New Zealand flights (departing Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch) and an entry ticket to the Show. Priced from $1099 (per person share twin), packages are available through House of Travel at www.houseoftravel.co.nz or 0800 838 747.
