PetrolWatch - December 2006
Pump prices stable in December
Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged throughout December 2006, retailing in the main centres at $1.43 per litre for petrol, after increasing four cents in late November, and 99 cents per litre for diesel.
The prices were marginally above those at the same time 12 months ago, and have since fallen five cents per litre on all fuels.
"We're pleased prices held firm during the busy Christmas shopping period, as this helped motorists budget for the forthcoming summer holiday travelling," said Mike Noon, AA General Manager Motoring Affairs.
"The static prices were particularly appreciated as the refined product price did increase during December, although this was partially offset by an improving exchange rate towards the end of the month."
"Coupled with sizeable fuel discounts which are available from most supermarkets throughout the country, in some cases up to 15 cents per litre, motorists can potentially enjoy fuel prices not seen since June 2005."
The AA encourages motorists to shop around for both groceries and petrol, in order to take advantage of the fuel discounts on offer.
98 octane
The
AA reminds motorists to take care that they are filling up
with the correct octane petrol for their car.
"We have received calls from Members complaining they have been charged between 11 and 12 cents more for premium grade petrol, when they were expecting to pay only five cents more than 91 octane," says Mr Noon.
"In fact, they have more than likely bought 98 octane petrol and not 95 octane at all. 98 octane sells for up to 11 or 12 cents per litre more than 91 octane, and is now available in most main centres. Both BP and Mobil offer 98 octane at selected service stations in place of 95 octane, and we encourage motorists to check the pump price carefully before filling up, so as not to get caught out."
"If you are unsure of which octane petrol to use in your car then ask the manufacturer, or check the owners' manual or label inside the fuel filler cap. Alternatively, AA Members can contact AA Technical Advice free of charge on 0800 500 333."
