Select Sale Concludes in Record-Breaking Style
Select Sale Concludes in Record-Breaking Style
The 2007 Karaka Select Sale has concluded in record-breaking style, with every previous record shattered.
The momentum of the
past week continued right to the end of this second session
with vendors smiling as the Sale has returned a whopping
NZ$21,626,000 in turnover, up 68% from last year's aggregate
of NZ$12,856,250 and up 60% from the record aggregate in
2000 of NZ$13,510,500.
The Premier and Select Sale
aggregates combined (NZ$78,460,000) have also shattered the
previous record turnover for the entire National Yearling
Sales Series of NZ$70,809,351 in 2000, with the Festival and
Carnival Sales still to go.
Incredibly, the aggregate for the Select Sale is also in excess of the Premier Sale aggregate for the first year New Zealand Bloodstock took the helm, in 1996.
Both the average and median have also rocketed past last year's figures, with the new median price of NZ$42,000 22% up on last year's average of NZ$34,560 let alone a 40% increase on last year's median of NZ$30,000. The new record Select Sale average of NZ$49,715 also reflects a 44% increase in average from last year. A total of 41 yearlings were sold for more than NZ$100,000 compared with eight last year.
With 593 lots catalogued for this session, 435 were sold at a clearance rate of 81.6%, up from 75% last year, exceeding a previous record clearance rate of 80% in 2004.
New Zealand Bloodstock Marketing Manager, Petrea Vela, summed up the last three days, "The Select Sale has been an overwhelming success with the results far beyond any expectations we had. To record an almost $9 million increase in turnover with just 36 more horses catalogued, a 40% increase in median, combined with a record clearance rate for this Sale is a huge boost to the industry and a great credit to vendors."
"Particularly noticeable has been the considerable strength of the domestic buying bench with lots of new faces amongst the regular buyers, which reflects the revival of confidence in our racing and breeding industries since the recent tax changes. The promise of increased returns to owners has already had an effect on their investment activity which, for vendors, means more funds available for reinvestment marking the start of a very exciting period in our industry's history."
With results sheets reflecting purchases heading to Australia, Ireland, Singapore, Philippines, Korea and Hong Kong as well as New Zealand, the leading individual buyer of the Select session was John Chalmers who purchased 16 yearlings for a total of NZ$897,000, including a top price of NZ$135,000 in the last five lots of the day for a Viking Ruler filly out of Success Express mare, Vargas Diamond, from Cambridge Stud.
Also prominent were Australian-based buyers Kieran Moore, John Morissey, Michael Stedman, Brian Jenkins plus local buyers including Paul Moroney, Phill Cataldo, Lance O'Sullivan, Graeme Rogerson, Dean Hawthorne, David Ellis, Robbie Hewetson and John Wheeler.
Leading vendor by aggregate was Garry and Mark
Chittick's Waikato Stud, with 23 horses sold for an
aggregate of NZ$1,712,500, an average at this session of
NZ$74,457, and a 100% clearance rate. The Stud's top price
of the Select Sale was Lot 865, an O'Reilly filly out of Not
Sure (Masterclass) bought for NZ$150,000 by Sydney buyer,
Steve Brem.
Lot 600 with Little Avondale Stud's
Sam Williams
The leading vendor by average was Buzz and Sam Williams' Little Avondale Stud in Masterton, who claimed top honours when the No Excuse Needed colt out of Cymbidium (Centaine) broke the record for the highest priced lot at this Sale when secured by Australian-based agent, Michael Stedman, for $230,000. The Stud sold seven yearlings for an aggregate of NZ$805,000 and an average of NZ$115,000.
Little Avondale's Stud's resident sire, Towkay (Last Tycoon), was the leading sire of the session with four yearlings sold for an average of NZ$81,875 including a top priced lot of NZ$135,000 for a filly out of Clermont Rose (Sound Reason). Towkay is currently the second leading sire in Hong Kong with leading performer, Armada, the winner of the Hong Kong Group 1 Stewards Cup last Sunday night.
Leading first season sire was Waikato Stud
resident, No Excuse Needed, with 12 yearlings sold for an
average of NZ$78,083 including the top priced lot of the
Sale. No Excuse Needed is represented by one of the
favourites in the New Zealand Bloodstock $500,000 2YO
Classique tomorrow at Te Rapa with his first stakeswinner,
Grand Dancer.
