Public law firm, Chen Palmer, has geared up
to assist business to face the climate change challenge by
acquiring the services of one of New Zealand's foremost
climate change experts, Murray Ward.
Mr Ward steered the development of climate change policy in New Zealand from 1996 to 2002, first through the Ministry for the Environment and later in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and has since worked on major international projects.
These include a review of "beyond Kyoto" proposals from the perspective of the carbon market for the International Emissions Trading Association and chairing the drafting group responsible for finalising the Marrakech Accord rules governing emissions trading under the Kyoto Protocol.
Mai Chen said Chen Palmer already had significant expertise in the climate change area and that Mr Ward would be an important addition to the team, complementing the firm's in-house skills and the experience of Chen Palmer consultants, the Hon Jim Sutton and the Rt Hon Wyatt Creech.
"The Government is engaged now in policy formulation to reduce New Zealand's carbon emissions and to achieve the Prime Minister's environmental sustainability objectives.
"It is inevitable that this process will result in legislative change to ensure that the regulatory framework supports greater energy efficiency, including new investment in renewable energies and in energy saving technologies," Mai Chen said.
