Spy Valley first ever wine
company to take four trophies at Sydney wine show
Leading Marlborough wine label Spy Valley has become the first wine company in the 26-year history of the Sydney international wine contest to win four trophies.
The Sydney International Wine Competition at the weekend attracted 2000 wines from more than a dozen countries and is established as Australia’s most prestigious wine competition.
The year of `007, has started brilliantly for Spy Valley Wines with stunning success in the Sydney competition with its riesling earning four trophies: best aromatic wine, best white table wine, best value white table wine and best non-Australian wine.
Spy Valley also won blue-gold and Top 100 awards for its 2006 pinot gris.
``This is the first time in the show’s long history that one company or any wine has won four trophies,’’ Spy Valley general manager Blair Gibbs said from Sydney today.
``The ‘007 year is shaping up well. Our wines continue to over achieve in all of our global markets and to see aromatic wines from Marlborough achieving accolade at this level is hugely pleasing for our viticultural and winemaking teams.’’
Spy Valley produces more than 100,000 cases of wine a year and is one of New Zealand’s leading family-owned wine companies.
Gibbs said today news of the Sydney result was great for showcasing premium NZ and Marlborough wines in Australia.
``This is fantastic news not just for Spy Valley but also for the Marlborough brand and for New Zealand wines,’’ he said.
``I’m really excited by this and we’re all looking forward to some special releases from the 2007 vintage ; 007 Spy Valley.’’
The company got its name from a US satellite monitoring base further up the road in the Waihopai valley.
Spy Valley’s new winery last year won the New Zealand Institute of Architects commercial category award and a New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects award this year for its special design. The vineyard also provides accommodation with Timara Lodge – a famous old heritage building.
