Businesses take on the sustainability challenge
Bay of Plenty businesses can now sign up for this year’s Get Sustainable Challenge, one of the most successful programmes of its kind in New Zealand.
The Challenge attracted over 40 registrations last year, ranging from a small consulting firm to a nationwide logistics provider.
It is run by the Sustainable Business Network Bay of Plenty with support from Environment Bay of Plenty and other sponsors.
Bay of Plenty regional manager, Jo Wills, says the Challenge gives Bay of Plenty businesses the opportunity to assess the sustainability of their whole business, from strategy and policies to operations and performance monitoring.
They can also enter the Bay of Plenty Sustainable Business Awards, one of the Bay’s premier businesses events, she adds.
“Many businesses want to reduce their environmental impact, increase involvement in their communities, and do better business at the same time. The Challenge supports them to do that.”
Environment Bay of Plenty chairman John Cronin says the regional council is proud to again sponsor the Challenge. “We see that it will help businesses identify steps to lessen their dependence on non renewable resources and reduce climate damaging carbon emissions, while maintaining a profitable business.” Norske Skog Tasman and Fulton Hogan Ltd Bay of Plenty are other key sponsors.
Alan Bougen, chairman of the Sustainable Business Network Bay of Plenty, says the Challenge and the work of the Sustainable Business Network “is very much about inspiring sustainable action. We can provide our members with solid tools, resources and guidance throughout the journey.”
The Get Sustainable Challenge assessment provides a snapshot of the business, and a detailed report highlighting areas of existing strengths, limitations and suggested goals for the future.
The Challenge also provides the tools for the implementation of sustainable business practices with workshops throughout the year, each with a particular focus on a core area of sustainability.
Registrations for the Get Sustainable
Challenge Awards close on June 15. The awards night will be
held on August 9 at the new Sebel Trinity Wharf Hotel.
Businesses interested in the assessment can register at any
