Hoyts Opens World-Leading Cinema Complex

Hoyts Opens World-Leading Cinema Complex In Sylvia Park

30 March, 2007

The silver screen never looked as good as it does right now in New Zealand’s newest and most exciting cinema complex - Hoyts Sylvia Park – which is now open to the public.

Hoyts’ new $30 million, flagship 10-screen cinema complex is the centrepiece of the entertainment precinct (Stage Three) of the Sylvia Park shopping centre, and is changing Aucklanders’ cinema-going experience with a number of world and local firsts.

The largest cinema in the complex, Cinemaxx, is home to the world’s largest multiplex screen at over 30.5 metres wide. Hoyts was officially advised by Guinness World RecordsTM earlier this week that Cinema 1 at Sylvia Park will now be recognised as the World’s Largest Permanently Fixed 35mm Cinema Screen.

CEO of Hoyts, Stuart McInnes, says Hoyts Sylvia Park signals the long-awaited presence of a world-leading cinema in New Zealand.

“We’re hugely excited about our revolutionary new cinema complex which has truly broken the mould in terms of the range of exciting and innovative features we can now offer,” he says.

Mr McInnes says the new seat layout in all 10 cinemas allows 65 per cent more legroom than the average cinema in New Zealand or Australia. In fact, to even touch the back of the seat in front of them a moviegoer will need to be at least 190cm tall.

Other innovations include another first in New Zealand – a beanbag cinema. Dubbed The Halfpipe, the cinema targets the youth market with oversized beanbags designed to seat two adults and three children. The cinema is sponsored by Cadbury’s Jaffas and the beanbags are designed to look like giant jaffas.

Mr McInnes says Hoyts’ La Premiere offering provides the ultimate luxurious cinema experience with the development of its unique double love booths, situated in the prime viewing positions of each of the four largest cinemas.

Each booth contains double electronic reclining leather lounges, call buttons for in-cinema dining and individually controlled lighting.

“The red carpet luxury that comes with the La Premiere makes this the ultimate date venue and deluxe cinematic experience,” he says.

Also included in the complex is the Directors Lounge - a corporate entertaining space with a private bar area and two luxurious cinemas - and two themed children’s birthday party rooms.

The cinema is also equipped with 2D and 3D projectors and will house the first DCI compliant digital projector in New Zealand - making it the first US major studio-approved cinema in the country.

Hoyts Sylvia Park increases the number of Hoyts screens in New Zealand to 58 with 18 in Auckland.

“There’s no doubt that the Sylvia Park complex is providing something cinema goers will have never experienced before in New Zealand,” Mr McInnes says.
