Bellota Wins Prestigious Design Award
Bellota Wins Prestigious Design Award
The Peter Gordon inspired Tapas bar, 'Bellota', (pronounced Bey-otta) has been announced as a winner of a prestigious architectural design award, just five months after opening its doors to the public.
Bellota's design team, including the award-winning architect Andrew Lister, are to be presented with a Resene New Zealand Award for Architecture by the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) at a gala awards dinner in May.
The same team won a similar NZIA award in 2004 for Orbit restaurant, which was then praised for its "restrained interior creating an intimate, comfortable environment through the use of texture, colour and light is in direct and dramatic contrast to its outward revolving circular form with edge-to-ceiling glass and an ever changing cityscape."
Expressing his delight at this latest plaudit for Bellota, General Manager for SKYCITY Auckland David Christian said:
"This is absolutely fantastic news for Bellota, particularly coming so soon after officially opening to the Auckland public.
"When Peter Gordon first put forward the idea for Bellota, his vision was to provide Auckland's most authentic Spanish dining experience, but with a contemporary twist to the traditional Tapas bar.
"Bellota's unique design has succeeded in creating a wonderful atmosphere, the dining experience is further complemented by our predominantly Spanish menu and wine lists, and extensive knowledge of our staff - all of whom have spent some time in Spain. All these aspects complement each other perfectly to provide a totally authentic Spanish dining experience."
"Congratulations to Andrew Lister and the design team on this well-deserved award!"
The NZIA Resene Awards for Architecture recognise the very best in New Zealand architecture produced over the last twelve months. A total of 28 entries including homes, offices, education and hospitality projects were named New Zealand Award recipients from more than 119 entries nationwide.
Judges evaluated entries against criteria including the relationship of a building to its site and context, design quality, building form, structure and spatial qualities. User satisfaction, the use of colour and materials and environmental aspects were also taken into account.
The main consideration for the judges in assessing projects is how well a building resolves key design issues and then builds on this solution to "contribute to the advancement of architecture".
