InternetNZ responds to Telecom's separation

InternetNZ responds to Telecom's separation announcement

Media Release - 13 April 2007

InternetNZ has noted Telecom's announcement today in response to last week's operational separation discussion document.

"InternetNZ will study Telecom's proposal over the coming days and respond more fully next week. We will also meet with Telecom to discuss the proposal in more depth," said InternetNZ Deputy Executive Director Jordan Carter.

"In our submissions on the telecommunications bill last year, InternetNZ argued that structural separation of Telecom would be the ideal outcome. To the extent that today's proposals are a step in that direction, they are to be welcomed. The proposal is a good basis for further discussion.

"It is important to note, however, that the proposal from the Government last week does not go beyond the BT model, as asserted by Wayne Boyd this morning. Understanding Telecom's concerns is a key reason for InternetNZ to meet with the company.

"Telecom's proposal does not include electronics and is only intended to include copper network infrastructure. As such it does not seem to deliver the future proof solution required.

"InternetNZ hopes to make further comment early next week," Jordan Carter said.
