The rising NZ dollar makes New
Zealand board game publisher think outside the square.
Independent board game publisher, Matt Taylor, says "the
rising NZ dollar is presenting considerable challenges to
small exporters and predicts that if current trends continue
export sales to the USA in particular will slow. Matt Taylor
of Wellington is however looking forward to the challenge of
tackling the problem with the same innovation he used when
creating, Breakscore, his educational family board game.
Taylor who markets the board game BreakScore® through his web site www.breakscore.com says "I have taken new promotional initiatives in New Zealand involving schools, correctional facilities, and fundraising groups, that should take up the slack in overseas sales."
Unlike a number of manufacturers, Taylor will not be moving his production to China or any where else off-shore. "This is a Kiwi game, designed and produced in New Zealand. Any such move would be, in my view, irresponsible in terms of the social cost to NZ," Taylor says, "if everyone did that there'd be no jobs left here. Initiatives like the Buy Kiwi Made campaign, launched by Sue Bradford, Green MP and government spokesperson are "on the right track."
Breakscore, which was first published in New Zealand in 1984, is now into a record fifth edition. "It's always been a Kiwi game, and always will be," says Taylor. "and , the biggest bonus of all is that, no batteries are required!"
