More daylight saving a boost for retailers
Auckland's leading retailing district is welcoming the Government's announcement today that daylight saving will be extended, saying it will give spring and autumn retail statistics a shot in the arm.
"More summer will mean more social interaction and more leisure time for people at the end of the day. People treat themselves more and interact more when the days are longer. Whereas when the days are short people tend to hibernate. Hence retail and hospitality always have a winter lull.
"Effectively extending the summer period by three weeks will not only be good for communities but it will be positive for the economy," said Cameron Brewer, head of the Newmarket Business Association tonight
"The latest Statistic New Zealand retail figures show February was a very good month for retail, with 19 out of the 24 retail industries experiencing increased sales on the previous month.
"The February statistics revealed a lot of discretionary spend directed towards entertainment and having the house looking good. That's reflected in the spikes shown in supermarket sales, accommodation, bars and clubs, and cafes and restaurants. The statistics also showed that in summer people are also out and about buying hardware, homeware and appliances.
"Effectively extending the period when people feel more motivated, positive and social is a win for everyone," said Mr Brewer.
