Symantec Advocates Data Deduplication as Part of an Overall Backup Strategy

Veritas NetBackup PureDisk To Expand Integration of Data Deduplication into Data Centre Environments with New Features for High Availability, Security and Backup Planning and Reporting

Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) has announced enhancements to its NetBackup PureDisk data deduplication solution which will address critical requirements for today’s data centre backup architectures. Enterprises struggling to meet backup windows seek new disk-based backup solutions that can integrate with their existing backup infrastructure. By leveraging PureDisk data deduplication as part of their overall backup strategy, customers can dramatically reduce storage and bandwidth consumed from disk-based backups.

The ever-increasing use of disks as part of the backup process enables backup data to be online and available and as such drives new requirements for security, high availability and end-to-end reporting in today’s data protection environments. New capabilities planned for the forthcoming release of NetBackup PureDisk, which will be generally available in June 2007, address these requirements by including integration with Veritas Backup Reporter, improvements to storage availability and expanded security features for both enterprise customers and backup service providers.

NetBackup PureDisk Integration with Veritas Backup Reporter Delivers Enterprise Manageability

As customers embrace disk-based architectures within their backup environments, many find themselves struggling to deliver both operational and compliance reporting across data centres that include disk, tape and advanced data protection methods. New enhancements to NetBackup PureDisk allow enterprise customers to use a single application – Veritas Backup Reporter, to consolidate reporting on the backup activities of PureDisk, NetBackup and other major backup applications. With centralised backup reporting and the ability to plan growth based on the historical data of all backup types, customers can better manage and customise their backup methods, including tape backups, snapshots and data deduplication from PureDisk.

Open, Flexible High Availability Architecture Increases Data Availability

As disk-based backup environments grow, the scalability and availability of disk-based backup solutions becomes paramount. Symantec architected NetBackup PureDisk to meet scalability and performance needs by separating the management of file metadata from file content. This approach allows customers to more easily configure, deploy and maintain large volumes of deduplicated data (hundreds of terabytes). As part of the NetBackup platform, PureDisk gives customers more flexibility over how they scale their backup storage, maintain availability and ensure reliable disaster recovery.

NetBackup PureDisk now supports newer disk and traditional tape-based strategies for data protection and availability. The forthcoming NetBackup PureDisk release will deliver online failover for PureDisk environments with multiple servers. In large backup environments, if the server that controls PureDisk storage experiences an outage, failover to a standby server can be executed in minutes. A spare PureDisk server can be configured on any compatible hardware, giving IT organisations flexibility to increase the availability of their backup environment with minimal investment.

Expanded Security Features for Enterprises and Service Providers

As customers deploy data deduplication into their existing backup environment, and more of their data transitions online, this increases the need for consistent access control and multiple layers of security become critical. In addition to support for Active Directory / LDAP authentication, Symantec’s innovative new Data Lock feature gives enterprises and service providers a new level of data security by enabling an end-user customer to apply a unique password to their data. The feature secures all backup data of this end user with an additional password that prevents PureDisk system administrators from accessing that data. The password controls access to the data, but does not interrupt the backup process. Backup jobs that use Data Lock run as scheduled, but backup administrators cannot browse or restore data without entering the Data Lock password.

Availability

The new NetBackup PureDisk capabilities are scheduled to be generally available in June 2007. Backup Reporter may be purchased separately. NetBackup PureDisk and Backup Reporter are available directly through Symantec or via Symantec’s worldwide network of value-added resellers, distributors and systems integrators.
