Rotorua TRENZ steaming into Export Year

Media Release

Rotorua TRENZ steaming into Export Year

3 May 2007

New Zealand’s single biggest export sector – tourism - aims to increase its contribution to the economy as a result of the upcoming TRENZ 2007.

Business worth an estimated $2 billion will be generated by TRENZ (Tourism Rendezvous New Zealand), the country’s largest annual tourism event, being held for the first time in Rotorua, 21-24 May.

More than 400 New Zealand tourism businesses will gather at the brand new Rotorua Energy Events Centre for three days of intensive business activity.

They will meet with more than 350 international travel and tourism Buyers arriving from 28 countries to purchase accommodation, transport, attractions and activities at wholesale rates, and include them in holiday brochures and itineraries for forthcoming seasons.

More than 1300 people, including over 50 international and New Zealand media, are expected to attend the event and associated networking functions.

“Tourism already brings in $8.1 billion or 18.7 percent of New Zealand’s total export earnings – more than dairy ($5.7 billion), meat ($4.7 billion) or wood ($3.0 billion),” Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) Chief Executive Fiona Luhrs says.

“As part of the tourism sector’s contribution to Export Year 2007, we have made considerable efforts to bring improvements and innovations to TRENZ that will help our exhibiting tourism operators to generate valuable business.”

TRENZ is managed by TIA in partnership with Tourism New Zealand and supported by Air New Zealand, Qantas and Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing.

“At TRENZ 2007, the emphasis is on new products and the very latest world-class tourism offerings. There are a record 47 new Exhibitors and, in addition, no fewer than 58 Exhibitors with brand-new products to offer Buyers,” Ms Luhrs says.

The new Exhibitors range from superb adventure-lodges, nature and eco-tours, new ways to experience New Zealand’s history, land and wildlife, activities with an emphasis on health and wellbeing, and much more. There’s a real focus on genuine personalised Kiwi experiences.

The new tourism products will demonstrate that the New Zealand market continues to evolve and develop, providing new reasons for people to visit on holiday.

This is the first time TRENZ has been held outside Auckland or Christchurch and Ms Luhrs says TRENZ 2007 will make the most of the opportunities offered by Rotorua, which is New Zealand’s original visitor destination.

“The region’s geothermal, Maori and health spa experiences will give TRENZ 2007 a unique feel – and convince Buyers that New Zealand is the world’s ultimate visitor destination,” she says.

“TRENZ is a vital event for tourism businesses catering for international visitors and we go all out to impress the international Buyers and create an atmosphere that convinces them New Zealand is the right destination for their clients.”

Tourism is the fastest growing industry in the world and TRENZ 2007 will help ensure New Zealand continues to attract its share of the global travel market, Ms Luhrs says.
