Sensational Selling at the Bloomsbury Stud NZ Dispersal Sale

It was a sensational day of selling at the Dispersal Sale of Henrietta, Duchess of Bedford's Bloomsbury Stud NZ, with hot demand right throughout the day including two New Zealand sale ring records broken.

Setting a new record price for a broodmare sold at Karaka was Honor Lap (Lot 36) , the G.1 WATC Derby winning Honor Grades mare who fetched the top price of the Sale of NZ$825,000. In foal to Hussonet, the mare was knocked down to the bid of Don Ha, the purchaser of the sale-topping Zabeel-Sunline colt at this year's Karaka Premier Sale.

Ha said he had no plans when he came to the Sale of buying any mares but someone pointed out the potential of this mare moments before she came in the ring. "I thought, she got a million dollars back from her two foals at the sales so at half a million she would be a good investment. I spent a bit more than that but you don't get many opportunities to buy these sorts of mares so I thought I'd go for it."

The mare will now head to Sir Patrick Hogan's Cambridge Stud.

Don Ha was also briefly responsible for a new record priced weanling when he paid $400,000 for the Zabeel colt out of Myself (Nashwan) at Lot 15. However that was quickly surpassed just seven lots later when the Zabeel filly out of Twentyfirstcentury (Sadler's Wells) was bought for $500,000 by Michael Otto, setting a new weanling record for Karaka.

The broodmare session saw 31 horses sold for an aggregate of $3,197,000 at an average price of $103,145 with the 22 weanlings turning over $1,401,000 at an average price of $63,682. All 57 horses offered today were sold, with total takings of NZ$4,879,000 and an average price of $85,596.

Henrietta, Duchess of Bedford was jubilant following the conclusion of the Sale, "Some of the mares whose pedigrees were really exciting to me made fantastic prices and have gone to wonderful homes which, I suppose, was the part I minded about the most. I am thrilled Twentyfirstcentury is going to the Schick family, Mr Ha buying the Honor Lap and Zabeel colt is fantastic, the owners of Ticklish bought her mother which is wonderful - so many good things to come out of the day."
