Inaugural Mothers’ Day poll launched

The first known public opinion poll quizzing New Zealanders about their habits around Mothers’ Day is being conducted by the Newmarket Business Association.

The public is encouraged to participate in the five-question electronic poll – available on www.newmarket.net.nz

"Mothers’ Day is a big day in the retailing calendar. We all know advertisers give it plenty of attention. However what this poll will try to ascertain is how much attention the general public gives Mothers’ Day in reality," said Cameron Brewer, general manager of the Newmarket Business Association.

The poll questions people on whether they are spending more on gifts than in the past, if they tend to spend more on mothers than fathers, whether there’s a growing expectation to spend more, how much they spend on gifts, and if people are more likely to go out for a celebratory meal than in the past.

In the United States Mothers’ Day is now the most popular day to dine out at a restaurant, according to their National Restaurant Association.

"This poll will give us an indication as to whether the general public is increasingly supporting Mothers’ Day as much as advertisers are increasingly pushing it," said Mr Brewer.
