nzherald.co.nz named NZ’s top news website

It’s been a great couple of months for New Zealand’s top news website.

nzherald.co.nz has tonight (Fri. May 18, 2007) been named Best News Website in the annual Qantas Media Awards 2007. The tribute caps a highly successful two months recognition for the site.

In April nzherald.co.nz was one of only seven online newspaper sites in the world to be awarded with an Honoree mention in the prestigious international Webby Awards in the United States.

And just a week ago nzherald co.nz was voted best re-designed website in New Zealand at the NetGuide Awards.

nzherald.co.nz multimedia editor Jeremy Rees says the Qantas Media Award is a great result for the team.

“This award firmly establishes nzherald.co.nz as the leading news site in New Zealand. We are absolutely delighted with the award and the fact that nzherald.co.nz has become a daily destination for New Zealanders.

“With our focus on breaking news as it hits, New Zealanders keep coming back throughout the day to find out how stories have developed. This was acknowledged by the Qantas judges when they included us as a finalist in the category for best coverage of a breaking news story.”

Mr Rees says the site’s NetGuide award demonstrates its popularity with readers.

“The huge amount of user-generated content suggests the move to create an online community – enabling New Zealanders at home and overseas to share their views and opinions – has been very well received.

“People have obviously heard what’s happened at nzherald.co.nz.”

Commenting on the nzherald.co.nz award, the Qantas Media Awards judges say the site prevails by virtue of its ability to consistently bring readers into the picture.

“In particular, [the site’s] 'Your Views' columns of reader commentary often actually drives the stories they relate to.”
