The Screen Industry Maintains Its Momentum

Statistics NZ has today released the highlights of its 2005/06 survey of the screen industry. Total turnover for the sector in 2005/06 was $2.54 billion, a figure that is comparable to the figure of $2.6 billion in 2004/05.

"A $2,542 million turnover maintains the momentum of 2004/05 and highlights the resilience of the sector, despite the underlying churn that can take place due to the project based nature of the industry", New Zealand Screen Council Executive Director Tim Thorpe says. "New Zealand continues to make wonderful films, television projects and television commercials and to attract offshore productions to locate here"

"Presumably some residual expenditure from blockbusters King Kong and Narnia: The Lion and The Witch and The Wardrobe would have contributed to this figure. Even now overseas projects continue to want to locate here including Prince Caspian and Power Rangers. This endorses the strength of the sector".

Auckland, Wellington and Otago/Southland continue to be the main centres of activity in New Zealand.

The Screen Council is looking forward to the more comprehensive data that Statistics NZ will be releasing in October in its follow-up research report.
