Seafood Industry Energy-Efficiency Savvy

NZ Seafood Industry Council

Seafood Industry Energy-efficiency Savvy, Says Chief Executive

"The GDP value of fishing is based on raw materials and not the final, value-added product, which makes the ratio overstated in terms of energy efficiency," says Owen Symmans, chief executive of the NZ Seafood Industry Council. "As Statistics New Zealand clearly states in the report on page 13."

"Increases in fuel prices over the last three years combined with the high New Zealand dollar make energy efficiency measures increasingly important for the industry's profitability. Statistics New Zealand's analysis that the GDP contribution for the fishing industry has been vulnerable to increasing fuel prices is correct.

"Energy efficiency is important to the fishing industry. Up to 60% of operating costs relate to fuel therefore small changes in prices can have a big impact on seafood businesses.

"A focus of our annual conference was energy-wise fishing and it was embraced by the industry. We welcome continuing our relationship with EECA to further develop our energy efficiency strategy for the industry which will improve profitability and environmental performance, both key objectives of our industry."
