NZ's top real estate auctioneers on show

12 July 2007

Skill and style of New Zealand’s top real estate auctioneers on show this week

The NZ National Real Estate Auctioneers Championships held this week in Auckland, saw 36 auctioneers from around the country competing in senior and novice categories.

The winner of the senior competition was Mark Sumich of Auckland, owner of Sumich Estate Agents & Auctioneers Ltd.

A regular contender and previous national competition runner-up, Mark has been at the coalface of auctions for nearly 20 years and is involved in the sale of property from small units through to multi-million dollar mansions.

Mark said on winning yesterday that he was looking forward to competing in the 2007 Australasian Real Estate Institute’s Auctioneering Championships in Perth later in the year and hoped “to bring the trophy for overall champion home.”

Also competing with auctioneers across the Tasman in September will be experienced auctioneer and previous national competition winner, Phil McGoldrick of Harcourts Group in Christchurch who was awarded NZ Runner-Up at this week’s event.

Both these champion auctioneers carried the banner for New Zealand in the 2006 Australasian finals and hopefully one will claim the coveted Australasian championship title this year.

Another contender from Christchurch, Owen Patterson of Harcourts Grenadier, won the Novice Competition in Auckland this week.

Owen joined Harcourts as a real estate consultant late in 2005 and while he has conducted a charity auction and competed in the Harcourts Auction Championship earlier this year, he has yet to call a public property auction.

First established in1996, the NZ National Real Estate Auctioneers Championships have gone from strength to strength with this years event deemed “the most difficult competition we have ever had” according to chief judge Ross Foreman.

“I think either Mark or Phil have a real chance of winning the Australasian title,” said Mr Foreman.
