30 July 2007

Thought leaders within the actuarial profession and related fields will come together in New Zealand in September this year to delve into key issues facing the financial sector, including climate change risks.

The Institute of Actuaries of Australia Biennial Convention 2007 theme is Adventures in Risk.

More than 300 professionals from Australia and overseas are expected to participate in the premier event to discuss and debate issues including climate change, wealth management, superannuation, insurance in Asia, private equity verse public ownership and general/health insurance.

Actuaries, Senior Executives, Chief Financial Officers, Chief Investment Officers, Risk Managers and all finance related professionals, academics and regulators are expected to attend.

Fred Rowley, President of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, said the Convention is the premier event for the profession.

“The Convention is an opportunity for thought leaders within the profession to come together and to debate and talk about the key issues that are facing the financial sector,” Mr Rowley said.

“One of the key topics will be climate change and specifically we will be looking at the impact of climate change on general insurers, what the numbers mean, where to now and the Stern Review of the Economics of Climate Change.

“In the spirit of climate change the Convention will be a carbon neutral event. A portion of the registration fee for the Convention will be used to purchase renewable energy to offset any carbon emissions generated.

“The Convention features a strong program of international speakers from the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Australasia,” he said.

Delegates will hear from plenary speakers Rob Coombe, Chief Executive Officer BT Financial Group, about wealth management, Tony Coleman, Chief Risk Office at Insurance Australia Group, about climate economics, Jane Diplock AO, Chairman Executive Committee Executive Committee International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) about developments in global securities regulation, Gary Venter, Managing Director in the Instrat Group, Guy Carpenter & Company Inc, about enterprise risk models in strategic planning, and many others.

The conference will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand, from Sunday 23 September to Wednesday 26 September 2007.

Registration for the Convention closes Friday 31 August 2007. Early Bird registration has been extended to 14 August 2007. For more information visit www.actuaries.asn.au/events.
