100% Kiwi-owned Orcon Unbundles the Local Loop

Orcon has today become part of New Zealand telecommunications history, as the first 100% Kiwi-owned telecommunications provider to unbundle the local loop.

"Being first is in keeping with Orcon's history. We are proud of the fact that we were the first to launch wholesale broadband services in New Zealand, and today we are proud to record yet another first," said Orcon Chief Executive Scott Bartlett.

In the trial arrangement, Orcon has access to Telecom's Ponsonby and Glenfield telephone exchanges to install its cutting edge telephone and broadband equipment.

"Orcon is a brand that has grown by delivering innovative products and services to New Zealanders," continued Bartlett. "In the coming months we will trial services that will blow the minds of Kiwi consumers."

Orcon will be inviting its customers in Ponsonby and Glenfield to the trial in September, and will be delivering broadband speeds of up to 24 megabits per second - five times faster than any DSL broadband available today.

In another first, Orcon has deployed New Zealand's first VDSL2 broadband equipment that in the future will allow speeds of up to 100 megabits per second.

"With access to the unbundled local loop, we will provide faster speeds and more bang for your buck," continued Bartlett.

Over the next few months, more exchanges will be opened up under this trial agreement, with Orcon installing equipment in the Mt Albert, Ellerslie and Browns Bay exchanges.

"After a long journey, we are now finally in position to deliver world class products and services to the residents of these five areas. We are eager to provide these services to all New Zealanders" concluded Bartlett.
