‘A Simple Switch’ to reduce energy consumption

Media Release

Philips website calls for ‘A Simple Switch’ to reduce energy consumption

Global electronics company Philips has launched an educational, interactive website challenging visitors to pledge to switch their home’s standard light bulbs to energy-efficient alternatives.

The site, www.asimpleswitch.com, features vivid animations which show how switching light bulbs to energy-saving alternatives can benefit the environment. According to the site, switching just 10 bulbs in the home would spare the earth’s atmosphere up to 3280kg of CO2 emissions.

Those who pledge have their names displayed on the site with the number of bulbs they have committed to switch. After visitors make a pledge, they can email friends through the site, inviting them to also pledge to switch.

According to the site, visitors to date have pledged to switch 181,426 incandescent bulbs to energy efficient alternatives. The environmental impact of this would be equivalent to 12,700 cars being taken off the road.

Commercial Manager for Philips Lighting New Zealand, Gordon Wiffen, says the site shows that even simple steps that we all can take will make a real difference to the environment.

“At Philips, we believe it is time to act now for everyone and that’s why we offer consumers a wide choice of energy efficient lighting products,” says Wiffen.
