Well-clad houses keep weather out

BRANZ COMMUNITY NOTICE

Well-clad houses keep weather out

A special offer of two good practice guides, including the newly released Texture-Coated Claddings and the already popular Masonry Veneer publication is being offered by BRANZ until the end of August, to underline to industry professionals as well as home handymen, the importance of the correct detailing and installation of these types of exterior claddings.

According to BRANZ Science Communications Manager, Chris Kane, “it’s important to understand that the width of cavities behind masonry veneer cladding is different from that required for other cladding types. Getting it wrong can cause real problems. Masonry veneers are usually left unpainted and the bricks or concrete units are relatively porous which, in extreme cases, can cause moisture build-up in the cavity where drainage is not provided and subsequent problems with rotting.”

To highlight what the differences are and to assist with ‘getting it right – first time’ BRANZ has made available two Good Practice Guides as a special offer.

The Texture-Coated Claddings guide covers the systems and performance requirements for texture coated claddings, Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS) and texture coated fibre cement. It also provides detailed information on the weatherproof coating application and textured coating application to both EIFS and texture-coated fibre-cement.

The Masonry Veneer guide covers the design and installation of brick and concrete block veneer construction supported by a timber framed structural wall.
