Only 2% spend more on dad than mum

Auckland's leading shopping district has released a survey result that backs up Statistics New Zealand’s claims today that dads generally lose out on Fathers' Day.

The Newmarket Business Association conducted an electronic poll* which questioned people as to whether they spent more or less on Mothers’ Day compared to Fathers’ Day.

52% said they spend more on Mothers’ Day, 46% said about the same, while only 2% said they spent more on Fathers' Day.

“Not only do dads celebrate fewer Fathers' Days but their children tend to spend more on Mothers' Day. It’s ironic because most of today's fathers are probably more involved in their kids’ lives than their fathers and grandfathers before them,” says Cameron Brewer, general manager of the Newmarket Business Association.

Mr Brewer says Mothers' Day has grown to become the second biggest single event in the retailing calendar, behind Christmas, with some estimating it has become a billion dollar day.

“It seems that almost everyone believes Dads are cheaper to please.”

“We’re not suggesting that people need to spend more money on dad. However, perhaps it’s time for a little more fuss to be made on Fathers' Day,” says Mr Brewer.

Statistics New Zealand released figures today that show that father's do generally miss out because they don’t live as long as women and are becoming fathers later in life.
