New vehicle market
strength continues in August
August was another good month for the new vehicle industry, with 6800 new cars sold during the month (up 0.1% on August 2006), along with 2176 new commercial vehicles (up 1.4% on the same month last year). Year to date, the new car market is running 1.6% ahead of last year, with new commercial vehicles ahead by 4.1%.
“The new vehicle industry has enjoyed a bouyant winter,” said Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association, “and is well on track to post the second 100,000 plus year since the start of the post-nineties recovery. It’s a competitive market out there, and clearly consumers are responding to the value on offer.”
Toyota continues to build a strong lead in both the new car and commercial vehicle markets. Ford maintains second overall in total vehicles, but Holden holds a strong second place in passenger cars. Holden Commodore continues to stretch its lead over Toyota Corolla as the country’s top-selling car model.
