Top Sport Websites

A website ranking of the top ten channels in Nielsen//NetRatings' Market Intelligence Sport category for all visitors' unique browsers (from New Zealand and overseas) for the week to 23 September 2007.

With many people’s attention being drawn to the Rugby World Cup being played out in France at the moment, we at Nielsen//NetRatings thought it would be timely to see which websites are dominating our Sport category in Market Intelligence. Not surprisingly, rugby specialist websites are sitting in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th spots behind leaders nzherald.co.nz/sport and stuff.co.nz. There has been a dramatic increase in traffic going to sport sites over the last three weeks since the Rugby World Cup began.

So far in September, there has been 1,723,274 unique browsers to websites within the Sport category in New Zealand. This only measures up to the 25th of the month, and yet September already has significantly higher numbers than previous months in 2007. For example, the month of August had a total of 1,462,543 unique browsers to websites within the Sport category for the whole month, and January had only 1,196,759 unique browsers.

The increase in traffic numbers are partly explained by New Zealanders participating in very high numbers in virtual rugby competitions courtesy of Telecom, and of course, the world.telecomvirtualrugby.co.nz set up especially for the World Cup has brought overall traffic numbers up in September. However, all specialist rugby sites and most general sport news websites have seen a substantial increase in unique browsers this month as Kiwis look to catch up with news from the World Cup as soon as it happens.
