Former Port head honoured for contribution to logistics

Ports of Auckland's recently retired Managing Director, Geoff Vazey, has been honoured by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) with a prestigious award recognising his outstanding contribution to the logistics/supply chain sector and the community.

The Sir Bob Owens Award was presented to Mr Vazey at a dinner at the Hyatt Hotel in Auckland on Thursday night (18 October) in culmination of CILT's annual awards day forum.

Presenting the award, CILT president Peter Snow said that during 19 years with Ports of Auckland, Geoff Vazey had made "a vast contribution to the community and to the logistics and supply chain environment".
Through Ports of Auckland, Mr Vazey had been involved in many community and education projects, Mr Snow said.

He had been instrumental in establishing the Chair in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the University of Auckland Business School and in the appointment of the University's first visiting Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Projects Mr Vazey had support included helping to establish an environmental group to clean up Auckland harbour, the farming and release of juvenile snapper in the Hauraki Gulf, and the provision of two inflatable rescue/support boats for use by sea scouts.

He had developed a close bond with local tangata whenua and, in his local community, had served on committees at Ardmore Primary School.
Mr Vazey is only the third recipient of the Sir Bob Owens Award. The two previous winners were the Hon. Richard Prebble and Dr Robin Dunlop.

Young Executive of the Year award
Ports of Auckland's Axis Intermodal brand sponsored the Young Executive of the Year award, which is made annually to a young person who has demonstrated the highest potential through his or her achievement in supply chain management, logistics and transport.

Ports of Auckland's Managing Director Jens Madsen presented the Young Executive of the Year award for 2007 to Andrew Body, the New Zealand Managing Director of Hyder Consulting (New Zealand) Limited.

Mr Body began his transport career at the Ministry of Transport, and at the age of 29 was responsible for a budget of more than $2 million as the Policy and Strategy manager.

In his current position, Mr Body had proved to be an outstanding consultant, an influential leader and an excellent business manager, Mr Madsen said.
