Lake Hayes Pinot Gris 2007 Wins Gold

Lake Hayes Pinot Gris 2007 has won Gold at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2007 announced yesterday. It is one of only two Pinot Gris to win gold in the coveted awards.

Produced by Amisfield Wine Company, this is the second consecutive vintage of Pinot Gris from the original site at Lake Hayes; the wine showing the lovely lacy nature of cool climate Gris.

Winemaker Jeff Sinnott says “We have been pleasantly surprised by the results so far in that the fruit has achieved full ripeness and as such is now beginning to show the true nature of this unique terroir”

“New clones have contributed different notes to the wine, especially the 7A clone which gives an intriguing citrus character we have not seen in Gris before. We have been waiting since 1998 to see the results from this new clone so we are now beginning to enjoy the rewards of our patience.”

Also receiving recognition at the awards is the Lake Hayes Pinot Noir 2006 which won a Bronze.

The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is the premier wine competition in New Zealand recognising excellence in winemaking. The competition is owned and organised by New Zealand Winegrowers and is only open to New Zealand wines.

“The Lake Hayes Pinot Gris drinks very well on its own but if you get to our bistro at Lake Hayes try it with the roast pear, parsnip and goat’s cheese salad and marvel at perfection,” Sinnott says.

Amisfield Wine Company is a small specialist producer of Pinot Noir, aromatic whites and Methode Traditionelle wines, made with grapes sourced from their Amisfield vineyard in Lowburn, Central Otago.
