Buddle Findlay lawyer named Aspiring Director 2007

She’s a lawyer, a doctor, a mother of three, an author, a student and a corporate director – to name a few.

Dr Marie Bismark is now also the recipient of the 2007 Institute of Directors’ Aspiring Director Award.

Marie, a senior solicitor with Buddle Findlay, is the third recipient of the award which is open to New Zealanders who show promise in developing careers as company directors.

Chairman of the Wellington Branch of the Institute of Directors, Bryan Gundersen, said Marie had been chosen for the Award because of her diverse background, and the fact she had already secured a significant directorship, on the board of ACC.

“Marie’s combined legal and medical background and training make her well-placed to carry out a range of significant and diverse governance roles. We felt very strongly that Marie has an exceptional future as a company director.”

Marie is a member of Buddle Findlay’s Wellington medico-legal team, with a special focus on health law and patients’ rights. She is also undertaking post-graduate training in Public Health Medicine, and was formerly a doctor at both Wellington and Auckland Hospitals.

Partner in Buddle Findlay, Jonathan Coates, said Marie’s achievements had been extraordinary.

“Since being admitted to the Bar in 2001, Marie has made a notable contribution to New Zealand’s medico-legal field, both as a legal adviser, and as a published author. At the same time, she’s pursued her interest in governance, and we’re delighted her efforts have been recognised by the Institute of Directors.

“This award represents a fantastic opportunity for her to further hone her skills in governance.”

Through her work with Buddle Findlay, Marie advises health providers, registration authorities, Crown entities and statutory bodies on legal matters and associated ethical and policy issues, and she has had secondments with the Medical Council of New Zealand and the Ministry of Health.

Her major appointments include board member, Accident Compensation Corporation and Member of Toi te Taiao: New Zealand Bioethics Council.

She has published in a number of New Zealand and international publications and journals, including most recently, a book chapter in the prestigious Legal Medicine (American College of Legal Medicine). New York: Elsevier, titled No-fault Medical Malpractice in New Zealand. This publication is a key textbook for American medical students and is updated every three years.

Marie lives in Wellington and has three children, aged four, six and seven.
