The National
Beekeepers Association (NBA) is pleased that the Court of
Appeal has recognized the genuine concerns of the beekeeping
industry.
“As a result of the Court's decision, the risks of new diseases entering the New Zealand beekeeping industry will be much more manageable.” said Frans Laas, President of the NBA.
“The NBA is taking further legal advice as it analyses the decision from the Court.”
“The National Beekeepers Association is very concerned for the sake of all beekeepers and the industries they provide pollination services to, that no more new diseases enter New Zealand beekeeping. Varroa has had an enormous impact in the North Island and is now spreading through the South Island. That has led to significant losses and cost impacts on the industry that have threatened the viability of beekeeping operations. To put beekeepers and the industries that rely on pollination at further risk, can not be justified.”
