More Gold For Burnt Spur Pinot
More Gold For Burnt Spur Pinot
Martinborough wine Burnt Spur 2006 Pinot Noir was awarded Blue Gold and Top 100 placing at the Sydney International Wine Show held early this month. This follows on from a series of Gold Medals since its release.
Blue Gold is awarded to the top 5 percent of around 2000 entrants, and is considered "an important result from an important show", says Burnt Spur winemaker Paul Mason.
The wine also won a Gold Medal at the Air New Zealand 2007 Wine Awards announced in Christchurch, plus Gold in both the Japan International Wine Challenge 2007 and the New Zealand International Wine Show 2007.
For winemaker Paul Mason, the awards "reward intensive work in the 35 hectare Burnt Spur vineyard south of Martinborough, and show a genuine 'terroir' difference".
"This is a true single vineyard wine. Its ripe fruity black doris plum flavours reflect the vineyard's unusual clay-based soils, compared to the more savoury characteristics of the traditionally stony Martinborough Terraces," he commented.
"2006 was a very good year for Martinborough, with a lovely warm summer. I knew when I first saw the fruit it would be a good year."
"It's fantastic for the district that plantings in one of the newer areas are really producing results. Burnt Spur's Trophy-winning 2004 Pinot Gris came from the same block, and we expected the notoriously moody Pinot Noir to take a little longer to develop."
