Orcon begins user trials of unbundled broadband and voice

Telecommunications provider Orcon last week began the final stage of testing of its unbundled telephone and broadband network in five suburbs around Auckland.

As Orcon prepares for the full customer launch of its own network, it has invited a group of customers to participate in a Beta trial in order to give consumers a taste of the future and for Orcon to collect feedback on the customers’ experiences.

"Orcon customers have come to expect a premium service from us, and with our own network, we are better able to manage the service levels required to deliver the broadband experience that people want," said Scott Bartlett, Orcon Chief Executive.

"We need to put the network under some pressure and collect customer feedback - hence the need for a Beta trial with real customers," continued Bartlett.

Orcon’s Beta trial customers, and those customers signing up to Orcon after the full market launch, will be severing ties with Telecom and moving their homeline on to Orcon’s new network. In doing so, they can expect to get broadband speeds of up to 24 Megabits per second.

One trial customer living in Ponsonby is currently getting broadband speeds of around 18 Megabits per second - more than four times faster than the four Megabits per second he was getting on the Telecom network.

"It's about time that Kiwis got decent broadband connections. It is great to see Orcon getting in there and really challenging Telecom," he said.

With promising feedback like this, Orcon is itching to get its products to market. It plans to launch next month, initially into the majority of homes and businesses in the Auckland suburbs of Ponsonby, Mt Albert, Browns Bay, Ellerslie and Glenfield.

"For the first time New Zealanders will have a real alternative, and we are optimistic that we will deliver an extraordinary communications experience to our customers," concluded Bartlett.
