Record-Breaking Sales Series at Karaka

Festival Sale Final Session Completes Record-Breaking Sales Series at Karaka

The 82nd National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka finished on a high note today with another very strong day of selling sending even more records tumbling.

The two-day Festival Sale has wrapped up the sales week by posting records of its own, with a new average, median and clearance rate for this session.

The staggering strength of the market seen at Karaka throughout the week carried right through to today, with a new record average of $16,857 up 34% from last year's average of $12,593, and up 20% on the previous record of $14,022 set in 2001. Even with a record top price of $80,000 helping those figures, the median has also posted a record of $12,000, up 20% on last year's record median of $10,000. This is combined with an exceptionally strong clearance rate for this session - also a record - of 84%.

New Zealand Bloodstock Marketing Manager Petrea Vela summed up the Festival Sale results, "Yesterday the first Festival sale session got off to a great start and, importantly, recorded a strong median and clearance rate assuring vendors that there was still some firepower to the buying bench at this session. Today, incredibly, the Sale has strengthened even further, with the clearance, average and median figures all climbing from yesterday to exceed previous records in every case. It really sums up what we have seen at Karaka right throughout the past week, and we are extremely grateful for the support from every vendor and buyer who has enabled us to generate such a fantastic result for the industry."

Festival Sale record-breaking colt by Catcher in the Rye
With 403 Festival Sale lots catalogued, 301 were sold for total takings of $5,073,850, up a huge 81% on last year's turnover of $2,795,700 for 222 horses sold.

The top price of the day was $65,000 for the very last lot of the Sale, a Don Eduardo colt from four-time winning Bluebird mare Azurebelle sold by Waitful Lodge to Markwood Lodge of Te Aroha. This exceeds the top price last year of $63,000 but wasn't enough to topple the new record of $80,000 for the Catcher in the Rye colt from Laundrette (Taufan) set yesterday.

The leading individual buyer of the Festival Sale was Paul Moroney Bloodstock with five yearlings purchased for $195,000, with a top price of $63,000 paid for the Viking Ruler colt from Maud Gonne (Yeats) sold by Walnut Hill Farms. These purchases are in addition to Moroney's six at the Premier Sale and 15 at the Select Sale bringing his total spend to $2,642,000.

The leading vendor of the session by aggregate was Wayne Larsen's Te Runga Stud, the home of resident sires Chianti, Strategic Image and Castledale. The stud sold 18 yearlings for an aggregate of $410,500 at an average price of $22,806, with a top price of $50,000 for the colt by Shinko King from Masterclass mare Possibly, bought by Mr DR Miller of Tauranga.

Highview Stud was next with a 100% clearance rate for the 11 yearlings on offer, sold for an aggregate of $327,500 at an average price of $29,773. The stud's top lot was the grey Align colt from Kashani mare Hot Collection bought by Tony Pike for $45,000.

With the top price of the Sale, Monty & Judy Henderson's Blue Gables Farm was the leading vendor by average with all six entries sold for an aggregate of $203,000, at an average price of $33,833.

All yearlings sold over the past week have until 3 March 2008 to nominate their purchases for the enhanced Karaka Million Series, with a payment deadline of 30 April 2008. For further information contact Marketing Manager Petrea Vela.
