SCOOP : 403,000 extra scoops of ice cream in cones were enjoyed by kiwis this summer!

Ice cream has been melting down kiwi chins and wrists and onto footpaths and beaches to the tune of 403,000 extra scoops this summer!

In New Zealand's hottest summer in ten years, New Zealanders have been doing what they do in summer - go to the dairy and buy an ice cream in a cone - in significantly larger numbers than last summer.

Sales of scoop ice cream have been boosted also by an extra big effort on the part of Fonterra Brands (Tip Top) to support dairies who sell their ice cream in a cone.

Tip Top has awarded the Silver Surf Store at Ohope Beach $8000 cash and the title '2008's Tip Top Ice Cream Parlour of the Year' for exceptional sales and service. The Singhs at Silver Surf rolled 40,000 more scoops this summer than their target (which was based on sales in 2007).

And Ollies in Royal Oak Auckland has been voted 2008's most popular ice cream parlour, in a 3000-strong on-line consumer survey. The result earns $2000 cash for Ollies and makes the flower-power-styled ice cream parlour's 35th birthday even sweeter.

Silver Surf Store and Ollies join nine other Tip Top ice cream parlours around New Zealand in a three hour window of "pandemonium" when single-scoop ice creams will go on sale for just ten cents. The full list of times and places are below .
