Farmers lands at The Base

Media Statement 15 April 2008

Tainui Group Holdings (TGH) and The Farmers Trading Company Limited (Farmers) are pleased to announce that the department store retailer has been confirmed as an anchor tenant for the next phase of The Base development at Te Rapa, Hamilton.

TGH CEO, Mike Pohio, said the 26,000 square metre mall project was an exciting and significant stage in the expansion of The Base retail and town centre development.

“We believe that having Farmers, a successful, high profile fashion department store, as the first tenant of the mall is a powerful endorsement of The Base,” Mr Pohio said.

Farmers Managing Director, Rod McDermott, said The Base was the best site in Hamilton for the company to expand into.

“The new 8,000 square metre store will be a flagship tenancy for Farmers.

“It will balance out the current retail offering at The Base and maximise Farmers’ presence within the greater Waikato district,” Mr McDermott said.

TGH General Manager - Property, Nathan York, said the two level mall will complement the existing 44,000 square metres of retail and commercial premises already operating at The Base.

“It will have a substantial retail, food, hospitality and leisure focus, with 800 underground car parks.

“We expect construction will start in this calendar year and will be completed in 2010,” Mr York said.
