High yielding hybrid now available

Farmers looking for plenty of high quality feed from medium-term pasture have a new option this season with the launch of Harper hybrid ryegrass from Agriseeds.

The latest hybrid on the market, and the first to be bred by Agriseeds, Harper is a solid performer, yielding 15-20 tonnes dry matter (DM) per ha, according to lower South Island area manager Glen McPhail.

Feedback from farmers who have tested it has been all positive, he says.

“The beauty of Harper is that it provides excellent yield year round, with very good DM production in winter and early spring, and it compares well to other hybrids in terms of persistence.”

Perfect for farmers in summer-moist areas who want an alternative to Italian or perennial ryegrass for two, three or four years, Harper can be used as medium-term pasture in all farm systems.

It’s quick to establish, and highly palatable, with a late flowering date (+13 days).

“As more and more farmers look to maximise pasture production in the face of rising input costs, we believe Harper offers an exciting new option this season,” McPhail says.

It is best sown spring or autumn, mixed with white clovers like Apex, Weka or Kotare. Tuscan red clover can also be included for sheep, beef or deer pastures.

Harper is only available Without endophyte.
