There’s a job for everyone, says salt

There’s a job for everyone, says salt

A job is available in New Zealand for everyone who wants one, says one of the country’s top recruitment companies.

Whether you are a Gen Y-er looking for flexible hours, an entrepreneurial spirit looking for a like-minded employer or someone returning to the workforce with experience to share, there is a job for you.

“Anyone in New Zealand can find a job that makes them feel happy, useful and appreciated,” says Jacqui Barratt, founder of recruitment company salt.

“And, even in times of high employment, it’s definitely possible for employers to find extraordinary personnel for their company. It’s just a question of finding the right match.”

And Barratt should know. Auckland-based salt, the company she founded in 2003, has quickly carved itself a large niche in a crowded sector, which sees more than 500 recruitment companies operating in Auckland alone.

She says one of the ‘secrets’ of her business success is actually no real secret at all. “We listen to people. We help them work out what they want, what will make them happy in a work sense, and then we find them the job that fits.

“Similarly we listen to what an employer has to say – find out all we can from them about their business and their company culture – and then help introduce them to the right candidate.

“Our philosophy is based on exceptional service, creativity and the belief that there’s a job for everyone,” says Barratt, who has worked in the industry for 14 years and is the president of the New Zealand Recruitment and Consulting Services Association (RCSA).

“We’re the vital ingredient because we enhance and improve the recruiting experience for both companies and candidates, hence our name.”

Since starting salt five years ago with the aim of delivering a highly responsive, personal recruitment service while keeping it ‘simple’, Barratt says she has concentrated on establishing a brand with a distinct personality.

“Everything we do comes down to atttention to detail – doing things properly and following through on the basics. Our fundamental principles and philosophies won’t change whether we have a high-employment economy or a low one, whether the economy is flying or whether it’s stalled for a little while.”

The company, which started with three staff and now employs 18, believes in “having fun in everything we do without compromising professionalism”.

Barratt says the salt team members are all experts in identifying, engaging and developing talent.

Their clients and candidates become part of the salt community, taking part in the salt two-way, on-line forum, and the company offers a unique after-placement service for both clients and candidates that extends for six months

salt is also the company that changed the nature of recruitment advertising. “We brought creativity and a new look to the career pages. Our style has since been much copied by others so we are evolving once again,” says Barratt, who clearly knows the recipe for success.
