Leaders in Good Business Announced

The Robin Hood Foundation board has announced 15 finalists after a record number of nominations for the 2008 Prime Ministers Social Hero Awards to be held at St Matthews in the City on Thursday 7 August 2008.

Commenting on the entries received, Sharon Hunter, Robin Hood Foundation Board Chairman said, “The calibre of this years entries is illustrative of the way in which a diverse mix of New Zealand businesses are leading the way in innovative engagement within the social sector.

The finalists are:

Fairfax Media Social Hero Award for Youth Partnership

ANZ & The Royal New Zealand Plunket Society Inc, a partnership enabling the delivery of valuable financial education and information to families across the nation.

Warehouse Stationery Ltd & KidsCan Raincoats for Kids enabling the provision of 22,000 financially disadvantaged children with raincoats enabling them to make their way warm and dry to school every day.

Vodafone Foundation & World of Difference providing 32 recipients to date, with mentoring, access to specialist skills provided by the corporate partners staff, media skills training, funding and the opening up of networks beyond those currently accessible – all of which has contributed to gains and increased reach far beyond the scope of the recipients original intentions.

Robin Hood Social Hero Award for Enabling Others

Air New Zealand & Christmas Online Auction for their contribution of almost half a million dollars to Star Jam, Starship Foundation and Make a Wish Foundation to enable the continuation of their work in the social sector.

AMP Financial Services for the AMP Scholarship Programme, which awards 12 annual scholarships from a pool of $200,000. Age is no barrier…the only criterion is attitude – that is, embodiment of the courage, determination and passion required to succeed at their chosen goal.

Robin Hood Social Hero Award for Partnership Strength over Time:

Hubbard’s Foods Ltd & Outward Bound Trust for having raised over $1million dollars and millions of dollars more in profile for their chosen not for profit over the past 13 years.

Westpac New Zealand Limited & Westpac Rescue Helicopters, a partnership enabling over 35,000 rescue missions throughout Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, and Christchurch regions.

MORE FM Social Hero Award for Health Sector Partnership

Auckland Airport & the National Burns Unit, a partnership built on a 7-year commitment to enable the expansion in breadth and depth of work in the care and recovery of burns victims nationwide.

Glasson’s & the Breast Cancer Research Trust, for the inception and success of a nationwide fashion movement for good that has to date raised over $3million to support the Breast Cancer Research Trust.

The National Bank & The Cancer Society of New Zealand Daffodil Day, a partnership spanning over 17 years, and raising over $12 million to date.

Robin Hood Social Hero Award for Innovative Solutions

AUT & Lifewise, an innovative approach to tackling not only the reality of homelessness, but also for its willingness to step up and develop a national forum to develop effective corporate citizenship in New Zealand.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force & Child, Youth, & Family for their ongoing programme of engagement for foster care kids and the special people, and often unrewarded people who care for them.

Robin Hood Social Hero Award for Community Engagement

NZ Post Community Post & Literacy, a programme that has enabled free distribution of approximately 1-1.5 million free envelopes to over 4,600 non-profit groups annually for the past decade plus literacy partnerships

Orca/Dulux & Habitat for Humanity, a partnership enabling the provision of free paint and manpower to support the housing of an estimated 29 needy families a year over the past 11 years.

The Mad Butcher & Suburban Newspapers Community Trust, for a partnership spanning 9 years and raising over $1million for community projects and health initiatives that have had a direct impact on the lives of countless kiwis.
