TelstraClear achieves milestone on Whangarei service

TelstraClear is a step closer to offering Next Generation telecommunications services to Whangarei after completing a major network upgrade this week.

The project has greatly increased TelstraClear’s network capacity between Auckland and Whangarei, paving the way for IP services to be offered via Northpower’s infrastructure.

Earlier this year the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreement that will allow TelstraClear to deliver IP voice and high speed broadband services over Northpower’s fibre optic core network, which runs through the major part of Whangarei and its CBD.

TelstraClear Chief Operating Officer Kevin Millar says the increased capacity on its network allows the company to deliver the bandwidth necessary to offer superior voice and data services to Whangarei, while also future proofing the network.

“This is a major milestone for the project, and upgrades our network to carry more than four times the previous capacity. The next step is connecting our network into Northpower’s fibre, which our engineers are currently working on.”

Northpower Chief Executive Mark Gatland says the companies are working closely to coordinate their respective infrastructure, and looks forward to delivering services shortly.

“By sharing resources and infrastructure, Northpower and TelstraClear will greatly enhance the economic development of the city, while creating minimal environmental impact or disruption to the public. There’s only a small amount of physical work required as we’re simply connecting two existing networks. This partnership makes sense for our companies, and for Whangarei.”

The partnership could provide more than 900 businesses, schools and medical health sites with true choice and access to services currently only available in the largest cities.

TelstraClear’s service offering will be communicated directly to customers in coming weeks. Whangarei businesses will have access to the company’s full product suite of Next Generation voice and data services.
