Rockburn Introduces Devil’s
Staircase Brand
Make the Descent…there’s a little Devil in all of us
Inspired by the winding road leading from Queenstown to Kingston along the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Devil’s Staircase is the newest addition to the Rockburn Wines portfolio.
Fruit for the Devil’s Staircase brand is sourced from Central Otago vineyards owned or managed by Rockburn.
The project began about 18 months ago after the Rockburn directors noted the opportunity for affordable, approachable wines – particularly Pinot Noir and particularly from Central Otago – both within New Zealand and in offshore markets.
“In the end, it was fortuitous that the 2008 vintage in Central Otago was as large as it was, as it allowed us greater flexibility in distinguishing between the two brands in the winery,” says Cellar Door Manager Catherine Badrak.
Though produced by Rockburn, the
new label has a distinctly different personality to its
parent brand, as evidenced by the back label text:
The Devil’s Staircase take the willing down into the realm of decadence and Bacchanalian delights. Here, everything is pleasure spiced up with a bit of naughty.
The unrelenting Central Otago environment tortures the vines whose twisted limbs produce a wine worthy of absolution; strong and sensual with lashings of dark fruit, sinfully succulent and devilishly good.
Enjoy either in isolated contemplation or in combination with the seared flesh of a sacrificial animal.
Badrak advises, “These are the kind of wines that you take around to your friend’s house for a casual barbecue… outwardly fruity and very approachable in their youth.”
The wines are currently available throughout New Zealand and will be distributed in offshore markets in the coming weeks.
