Contact welcomes decision on Te Mihi power station
Contact Energy has welcomed the granting of resource consents for the company’s 220 megawatt Te Mihi geothermal power station at Taupo.
The Minister for the Environment called in the company’s application to construct its Te Mihi geothermal power station in February 2008 and the final decision was released on Saturday.
Contact Chief Executive David Baldwin said Te Mihi was a nationally significant generation project that would provide the country with enough renewable, baseload energy to power more than 200,000 homes.
“Geothermal projects like Te Mihi will make an important contribution towards a secure supply of electricity while at the same time moving towards a higher renewables future,” he said.
“Good progress is being made with the development of three new geothermal power stations totaling approximately 500 megawatts. In addition to the granting of resource consents for the Te Mihi project, discussions with potential construction contractors for the Te Mihi power station are advancing on schedule.”
