Dan Carter has officially opened his first Auckland store

Business association compares it to 1964 Beatles tour of NZ

All Black Dan Carter and his business partners officially launched their Gas clothing store last night in Newmarket, and the local business association says such a high-profile endorsement could not have come at a better time.

“This is a huge boost for Newmarket’s status as the fashion capital. Dan Carter is the biggest name in New Zealand sport and arguably the most stylish. We will be welcoming Dan and his business partners with open arms to Newmarket. They have been a pleasure to work with,” said Cameron Brewer, general manager of the Newmarket Business Association.

Carter and his business partners already have Gas clothing stores in Christchurch and central Wellington.

The third Gas store, which imports high-end denim wear from Italy, is on Nuffield Street in Newmarket. In Christchurch GAS operates from property developer Dave Henderson's very trendy South Of Lichfield inner-city precinct. In central Wellington, Gas Clothing is in Mercer Street.

In October 2007 when Carter opened his Wellington store, the Newmarket Business Association suggested while the political capital was fine Carter also needed to be in Auckland's fashion capital of Newmarket.

“We put the word out there and the response we got from real estate agents, and building owners was overwhelming. Every leasing agent wanted Dan on their books and every business wanted Dan in their building.”

“Having Dan Carter show his confidence in Newmarket is a very positive signal. It also confirms that Newmarket is now the preferred address in Auckland for top apparel stores, leaving the CBD and anywhere else in the dust."
