Entries Open Soon For Dairy Industry Awards

- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

It’s time for farmers to pit themselves against their peers and enter the annual Dairy Industry Awards for 2009.

Entries open on 1 November 2008 and entrants can compete in one of three categories, Sharemilker of the Year, Farm Manager of the Year and Farm Trainee of the Year.

Past winners, Kairanga sharemilkers John and Wendy Allen, are the regional conveners. They were farming at Kuku Beach, just south of Levin, when they won the Rangitikei-Manawatu-Horowhenua Sharemilker of the Year Award in 2005. They also won merit awards for Best Financial and Farm Records, the Livestock Management Award and the ACC Thinksafe Sharemilker Award.

Mrs Allen said they had first entered the competition in 1999 when they were “small time farmers” and their business had grown through entering the competition and support from the dairy industry.

She said the benefit to entering the Dairy Industry Awards was not just about winning.

“It’s great if farm owners can support their staff by encouraging them to enter because participation can make a good business better. While you are going through the selection process you are getting constant feedback from the judges about how your business is doing and how it could be improved.”

A launch night for farmers interested in finding out more about the Dairy Industry Awards is being held at the Rongotea Tavern on Wednesday, November 12 at 7.00pm.
