Intrepid Travel offers discount to recently 'laid off'

Intrepid Travel has responded to enquiries from people wishing to finance overseas travel with their redundancy packages by offering them a 15 per cent discount off their adventures.

Intrepid is offering the discount to anyone who can provide evidence (in the form of an email or letter from their previous employer) that they have recently been made redundant. The discount applies to all small group adventures to over 100 countries around the world.

The discount is being offered following reports from Intrepid Travel sales staff of customers enquiring about using their redundancy pay-out to go on an extended trip.

"It appears that some people see being laid off as an opportunity to take a career break, reassess where they are at and see the world. By offering this discount we hope to make this opportunity a reality for them," said CEO and Co-founder, Darrell Wade.

"We realise not everyone who is laid off will be able to travel. Some people will have responsibilities such as mortgages and families. This offer is aimed at the sort of people we've seen coming into our stores - those who don't have financial responsibilities and who believe that redundancy could be a good thing for them."

Intrepid Travel has also observed an increase in sales of its popular overland trips. For example, sales of its 45-day overland trips between Kenya and Cape Town more than doubled between January and November this year when compared to the same period last year.

"Overland trips are our longer trips. The increased popularity of these trips indicates to us that consumers are looking to use this time to travel," said Darrell Wade.
