FFR appoints new director

Future Forests Research Ltd (FFR) has appointed a new director, Eoin Garden, to the board of the forestry sector research organisation.

Eoin is well known and highly regarded in the rural sector, with interests in forestry and pastoral farming, and extensive governance experience across a range of companies in the meat and wool and technology sectors.

He has been active in the Farm Forestry Association and is currently Chairman of Silver Fern Farms Ltd, where he has been leading efforts to achieve consolidation in the meat processing sector.

FFR Chairman Phil Taylor said Eoin, who lives at Millers Flat in South Otago, will bring a wealth of governance experience to the board and will provide a very valuable link with the pastoral farming sector at a strategic level.

“Eoin’s multi-sector experience, particularly in the rural business environment, will be invaluable as FFR looks to strengthen cross-sector land use and promote the role of forestry, through research, in the wider rural landscape,” Phil Taylor said.

Mr Taylor said the board position for a small forest owners representative had been vacant while FFR sought the right person to bring the necessary knowledge and experience to the job. “We are confident that Eoin fulfils all the requirements,” he said.

Future Forests Research Ltd was established in 2007 and has operated for a year. The company manages forestry research funding and commissions and coordinates research on behalf of its forest industry members and organisations in related sectors. FFR also disseminates research findings to its members and works with Crown Research Institutes and Government to inform policy decisions that affect forestry.

FFR members include forest owners and managers, consultants, service providers, educational organisations, local authorities, land owners, Maori authorities and Government agencies.

The company aims to assist the New Zealand forest sector to remain internationally competitive, by delivering well focused, quality research to assist the economic and social development of New Zealand.
