BNZ Weekly Overview - April 16 2009

Welcome to the April 16 2009 issue of the BNZ Weekly Overview.

The NZD has ended the week unchanged against the USD – still near 57 cents with support from those continuing to give the benefit of the doubt to light at the end of the US economic tunnel. This mild optimism – which has driven the sharp gains in sharemarkets, our currency’s rise, and contributed to upward pressure on long term interest rates – could easily prove misplaced. Time will tell in this extremely uncertain environment.

This week we take a look at some of the factors which pushed NZ house prices to high levels and examine those which have reversed and those which help explain what is happening in the market at the moment.
