Tasman Mill resource consent applications

MEDIA RELEASE

Tasman Mill resource consent applications

For immediate release: 28 April 2009

Environment Bay of Plenty has received joint resource consent applications from Carter Holt Harvey and Norske Skog Tasman to replace existing resource consents for their Kawerau mill operations.

Existing consents for air discharges and for the taking of water and discharging of wastewater to the Tarawera River do not expire until December 2012 but the mills are looking for long-term security ahead of a major infrastructure decision later this year. They are seeking a 35-year consent term for each.

Carter Holt Harvey is applying for resource consent for a new wood waste landfill to replace their current landfills. The proposed landfill is on Carter Holt Harvey-owned land along State Highway 30 at Onepu, an area known locally as the Davies Block. The applicant is seeking a 35-year consent term.

Environment Bay of Plenty Consents Manager Aileen Lawrie says the public is able to have their say through the public submission process.

“As well the submissions, there are a number of reports addressing the issues that will be considered in the decision process. A team of Environment Bay of Plenty staff and specialist consultants with a range of expertise will develop recommendations for the hearing panel,” Ms Lawrie said

Submissions close on 29 May 2009 with hearings set to begin on 20 July 2009. A decision is expected in August 2009. David Hill from resource management consultancy firm Hill Young Cooper has been appointed the independent chair of the hearing panel. Mr Hill will be assisted by an independent commissioner, Alan Bickers, Environment Bay of Plenty Councillor Neil Oppatt and a Whakatane District Councillor.

The resource consent applications are on Environment Bay of Plenty’s website www.envbop.govt.nz
