TRENZ 2009 attracting visitors to New Zealand

8 May 2009

Media Release

TRENZ 2009 attracting visitors to New Zealand

The tourism industry is finding new ways to attract visitors to New Zealand.

About 75 new tourism products will be brought to the international marketplace for the first time at TRENZ 2009, New Zealand’s largest international tourism business event, taking place at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds, 8-11 June 2009. For 26 tourism operators, it will be the first time they have attended TRENZ and promoted their products to international travel and tourism Buyers.

Tourism operators with new product and first-time exhibitors make up a significant proportion of the 270 tourism businesses at TRENZ 2009, giving the international travel trade plenty of reason to make the trip to New Zealand for the event.

“This reflects the continuing innovation and forward thinking of New Zealand’s tourism industry,” Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) Chief Executive Tim Cossar says.

TIA manages TRENZ which brings together New Zealand’s leading providers of accommodation, transport, activities and attractions to showcase the best of what New Zealand has to offer, along with the latest developments. The New Zealand operators will do business with about 260 international travel buyers and media from as far afield as China, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.

“In the face of a more challenging global marketplace, New Zealand tourism’s industry and individual operators need to keep our share of voice in international markets strong and TRENZ is critical in helping us to make this happen,” Mr Cossar says.

“Tourism operators are investing significantly in improving their businesses and developing new product. The goal of TRENZ is to help them maximise the returns from such investment, to drive business for our Exhibitors and the wider tourism industry,” Mr Cossar says.

For Kawarau Falls Station, Queenstown, due to open later this year, TRENZ is an important international platform to extend the reach of its marketing initiatives.

Kawarau Falls Station will include three international 5 star hotels – The Westin Queenstown, Intercontinental Queenstown and Quay West Resort Queenstown – operating alongside the second property of New Zealand’s newest 4 star hotel group, The Quadrant Hotel Queenstown. It will also include apartments, restaurants and bars in a self-contained alpine resort development, designed to rival major European and North American resorts.

“TRENZ allows us to gain international recognition from travel and tourism buyers, whom we see as absolutely essential for Kawarau Falls Station Queenstown to become one of New Zealand’s leading tourist destinations,” Director of Sales and Marketing New Zealand for the Quadrant Hotel Group, Natasha Du Plessis, says.

First time Exhibitor Harley Tours New Zealand offers a range of motorcycle tour options on legendary Harley Davidsons, on what it describes as some of the finest motorcycling roads in the world. New owners Baz and Ali Howie bought the business a year ago and are looking forward to their first TRENZ.

“We see TRENZ as a way to take the company we’ve purchased out to the international market, and we can bring the product to the client, with a Harley on our stand at TRENZ 2009,” Ali Howie says.

Long-established operator Johnston’s Coachlines Ltd is featuring their brand new product “The Ultimate Coach” at TRENZ 2009. Based in Christchurch, this luxury coach is “business class in a coach”. It is a full coach size (13.5 metres) fitted with 20 luxurious hand-crafted leather seats, bathroom and kitchen facilities, and three LCD screens for DVD viewing, complimented by a multi-channel music system.

This “Ultimate” coach is aimed at corporate events, VIP groups, small incentive groups and family touring.

Johnston’s Coachlines are the exclusive ground transport sponsor of TRENZ 2009 and say they appreciate the importance of TRENZ to showcase new products to international Buyers.

TRENZ 2009 is managed by TIA as agent of the Tourism Industry New Zealand Trust and in partnership with Tourism New Zealand, Air New Zealand and other industry supporters. For more information, visit www.trenz.co.nz .
